Pelvic Physiotherapy Consultation

Lisbon | Paço de Arcos

At Essence Prime Care we help to strengthen, rehabilitate and restore balance to the pelvic floor, promoting quality of life, well-being and health at all stages of a woman's life.

What is a Pelvic Physiotherapy Consultation?

A Pelvic Physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy dedicated to the prevention and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions - the set of muscles responsible for supporting the pelvic organs, stabilizing the spine and ensuring essential functions such as continence, sexuality and, in the case of women, support during pregnancy and childbirth.

At Essence Prime Care, we believe that body awareness is the key to successful treatment. That' s why part of the process involves teaching how to get to know, become aware of and represent this area in our heads, move this area, know how to contract and relax it well so that the pelvic floor muscles can work synergistically with the rest of the body, promoting not only rehabilitation, but also the prevention of future dysfunctions.

This monitoring is essential at various stages of life, from pregnancy and postpartum to chronic pelvic pain, menstrual changes or the menopause.

  • Sexual dysfunctions: pain during intercourse, vaginismus, lack of lubrication.

Frequently asked questions

Is pelvic physiotherapy only for women?

Although more sought after by women, it can also be useful for men, especially in cases of urinary dysfunction or after prostate surgery.

Can I have pelvic physiotherapy during pregnancy?

Yes, monitoring during pregnancy is highly recommended, helping to prepare the pelvic floor for childbirth and prevent future complications.

What about postpartum? When should I start?

We recommend starting at around 6-8 weeks after giving birth, depending on whether it was a vaginal delivery or a caesarean section. You can start right after the initial recovery (around 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the birth). The physiotherapist will carry out the assessment and indicate the ideal time.

Is it painful?

No. The exercises and manual therapy that we do during consultations are always outside of pain. If there is pain, there is no recovery. They are adapted to each patient's condition and tolerance. The aim is to promote awareness and rehabilitation, not pain.

Can I make an appointment even without symptoms?

Yes, pelvic physiotherapy is also preventative, helping to strengthen and care for the pelvic floor at any stage of life.
